A Commercial Move Isn’t As Easy As You Think
Most adults have moved a few times in their life. Maybe you moved into dorms for college, into an apartment after leaving your parents, or into your own house. You might think that a commercial move for your business will be basically the same.
But don’t be so quick to judge! While they seem similar, a commercial move comes with unique challenges that should be handled by a moving company. Even if you’re pretty sure you have it handled, a moving company can make your life a whole lot easier.
What is a commercial move?
With a residential move, you’re moving to a new residence. That involves packing up all your furniture, hauling it to a new place, and unpacking it.
A commercial move is very similar, except that you’re moving to a new commercial property. This usually happens when a business is renting a new office or expanding into a new space. The scope of the move will vary depending on the size of the business.
Not every moving company is able to help with a commercial move. Because of the different requirements, this type of move requires extra expertise. A commercial moving company can help you relocate to a new place without interrupting your normal business operations.
Here are some of the things to keep in mind as you’re planning a commercial move.
1. You’ll need to plan in a lot more detail.
With residential moves, there tends to be some flexibility. You have a set window of time to load your items, drive them to your new place, and unload them. But with a commercial move, the business owner needs to consider the following:
- How much expensive equipment is being moved
- How furniture will be transported, if the space is on the upper floor of an office building
- What day will most easily minimize interruptions to the business
- Whether there are any rules or regulations with the new building regarding the move
If your move takes too long, it could impact the revenue of the business. The goal of a commercial mover is to get the move done as quickly, efficiently, and painlessly as possible.
2. You’ll be moving confidential material.
Basically no matter the size of your business, moving your office means moving confidential material. That’s still the case even if most of your operations are done online.
You’ll have folders with hard copies of your employees’ tax information and SSNs. You might have internal account data in filing cabinets. And your computer system will house all the sensitive data that you don’t have on paper.
You have a legal obligation to protect confidential data. That data needs to remain protected throughout the move to a new building.
You can talk to your moving company about their policies when handling sensitive materials. At Movin’ On Movers, we have four decades of experience and an extremely reputable staff. We’ll help you with packing up your documents, and we can help unpack and secure them too.
3. You’ll be moving a lot of electronics.
The amount of electronics will vary depending on the business, of course. But most businesses these days rely on technology and networking on a daily basis. Other electronics are needed to keep the business running smoothly.
About 2 out of every 3 employees use at least two electronics while at work. Many employees also work from home part time or full time. On top of that, there’s heavy equipment like copiers, vending machines, televisions, and desks.
Electronics need to be handled carefully to avoid damage. Heavy equipment also needs to be handled carefully. It can be very difficult to move copiers and desks to a high floor of a commercial building. You should work with an insured moving company to ensure that all goes according to plan.
Your movers will also be able to help unpack the electronics in the new space. That’s great news, since it means that hooking the wiring up will be much faster and easier. All in all, movers save you a lot of hassle and downtime during a commercial move.
